Every wondered how some of our existing trails originated? Or if there are some hidden trails still waiting to be discovered? This rather marvelous tool by The National Library of Scotland has digitised OS maps back to the middle of the 19th Century. You can find a spot on the (old) map, and then using an overlay slider, transpose a recent aerial map as an overlay – which is nothing short of brilliant! Clicky Linky.

Interesting this. So apparently if you can reasonably prove that any trail has had livestock driven down it at some point in the past you can ride on it irrespective of it’s current designation (footpath or not), Would be handy for the next ‘argument with a rambler’….

Problem being, by the time you have hauled out the laptop and logged on, rambler / farmer has time to reload both barrels.
